Chair of Trustees
I love my role as Trustee (Chair since 2011) of the Bishop Cornish Education Centre, where my involvement began with the fundraising, design and construction of the inspiring eco-building for which we raised some £400,000 in funding, grants, donations, labour and materials. Since 2009, from this fantastic building our charity has run its inspiring preschool, a before and after school club, a music/arts room, promotes a love of music for school children and provides community space and a g-gauge outdoor train set that is proving to be a great educational resource. Although the charity and building have been recognised in various national and local awards, undoubtedly the greatest joy is in seeing happy children thriving in this creative and inspiring community. I am a governor at both Bishop Cornish Primary School and Devonport High School for Girls, a trustee of the China Fleet Trust and am a Legal Director at a transatlantic law firm, specialising in environmental and infrastructure planning.
I joined the Royal Navy in 1984 as a Logistics Officer and undertook a wide range of appointments both at sea in ships and submarines, and ashore. My naval career culminated in a 3 year assignment to Athens as the Defence Attaché to Greece and Bulgaria, before my retirement in 2018. My wife, Emma, and I have lived in East Cornwall since 1987 and our children attended a school in the county. I am also a Trustee and Treasurer of the Submariner Memorial Appeal.
I am currently the Deputy Head and class teacher of Year 6. I have been a dedicated member of the Bishop Cornish family since 2000 and have loved every minute!
I have a passion for teaching and delivering creative education which is exciting, inspiring, memory making, holistic and completely child-centred, helping children to achieve their full potential. I wouldn’t want to teach anywhere else!
I am a practising Christian and feel that not only am I able to express and share my faith working here at Bishop Cornish, but I am able to live and develop my faith through our school’s unique Christian ethos, helping to develop the faith of the children and families we serve. I am also worship leader, and lead family services at my own church.
I am an educational music specialist and am currently the church organist at Stoke Climsland Church. I have led many educational music workshops across the South West and have led various church and school choirs, singing and praising God all over Cornwall and Devon! Music is a huge part of my life, particularly composing music, which facilitates worship; I feel so privileged to be able to share this with the children, staff and families.
